According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.3 square miles (94 km2), of which 34.2 square miles (89 km2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (5.78%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15,901 people, 5,839 households, and 4,560 families residing in the township. The population density was 464.2 per square mile (179.3/km²). There were 6,346 housing units at an average density of 185.3 per square mile (71.5/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.30% White, 0.19% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.

There were 5,839 households out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.5% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.9% were non-families. 17.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.08.
