In Brookwood, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a drug or alcohol test is required, our company has expertise in hair analysis and operates testing centers across various cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for identifying drug use. Various employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are used by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, the court system, and for individuals on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection timeframe, covering up to 90 days, with reliable collection and little risk of tampering. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair presents an extensive historical record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month detection range for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample amount for analysis. For EtG extensions, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weight is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is suitable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes any other hair forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The four essential steps in a lab's drug testing process include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a specimen enters the lab’s workflow. This phase involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary drug abuse assessment. Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, yet a positive result must be affirmed to be legally admissible. Any samples that show a positive result during Screening must go through a subsequent confirmation step.

If a sample shows as positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration level compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive results from the screening phase are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing initial positive indications undergo a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Reduced chance of deception: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical insight: Provides a drug usage pattern over time, not only recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can modify drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Brookwood, AL, hair follicle tests offer distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One significant advantage is the superior detection capability, as hair samples provide more consistent and reliable information about an individual's drug use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
