Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Coker, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have testing facilities across Nationwide cities to administer a hair test. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body to be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is the extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making it almost foolproof. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine remains the most precise test.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A nearby-the-scalp 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for analyzing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In scenarios where scalp hair is missing, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. When we state head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening ensures a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

For any samples indicating potential positivity in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug monitoring the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing the results' accuracy.
  • Provides a historical record: It can track a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the density of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Excels over Urine Testing in Coker, AL lies in its superior accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
