Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cowarts, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be sampled. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods often feature a hair follicle drug test. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing a hair drug test over the standard urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation requirements use hair follicle test due to its extended detection range, reaching up to 90 days, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair provides a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. While it serves as a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive findings in Screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suspected of being positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations far lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can deliver a timeline of drug use over time, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cowarts, AL? Unlike urine tests, hair testing excels in its extended detection abilities and unparalleled reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
