Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Napier Field, Alabama. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair analysis with centers nationwide ready to conduct hair evaluations. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a favored method for drug checks in recent times. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair analysis over regular urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. Its key advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, done under supervised conditions, making it challenging to tamper with. However, urine testing remains the preferred method for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a lengthy history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When gathered from areas near the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol presence for as much as about 90 days. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide approximately 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or for tests exceeding 10 panels, an amount of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This process checks that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not available via electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed for legal purposes. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require further validation.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is sourced from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than methods using urine or oral fluid. This complexity makes hair drug screening the toughest methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is administered using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples found positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire series from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can reveal drug consumption for a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection limits.
  • High difficulty to deceive: Cheating a hair drug assay is extremely challenging, enhancing accuracy in results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It shows drug usage trends over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of showing recent consumption: Drugs only become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug assays are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Varied factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
