Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tarrant, Alabama. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these services, with testing centers located in cities across the Nation ready to perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or other body hair is used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer various custom hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Many workplaces, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists require hair drug testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, obtained through an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still reign as the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged overview of alcohol and other substances. Hair closer to the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug use for nearly a 3-month period. Its collection is straightforward, slightly tough to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we specify head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair, on the other hand, includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in processing drug test outcomes in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening is the initial brisk evaluation for substance abuse. Though cost-efficient in ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples flagged as potentially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as potentially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies to undertake.

Confirmation of any potentially positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as potentially positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can sense drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical evidence: It delivers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
