Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Wilton, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is your hair testing expert with centers available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening methods. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often rely on these tests. The major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug use, which generally spans up to 90 days, obtained through observed collection, and is exceedingly difficult to manipulate. Despite this, urine tests remain the most credible for detecting very recent drug consumption, within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair samples have gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of new growth. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and drug usage. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 strands of hair (similar to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or when testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Use a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equal amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to any other hair type (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab procedure for processing a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes needed data entry unavailable from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary drug abuse check. It's an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples. Nonetheless, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be legally valid. All samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample register presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial specimen for Extraction, where drugs are separated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva). This makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Chronicles usage: It presents a record of drug use over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be affected by hair color and personal variations in hair growth.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle drug testing stands superior to urine testing due to its extended detection period. In Wilton, AL, many employers and courts prefer hair tests because they offer exceptional accuracy in identifying drug use. Hair tests can detect substances up to 90 days, a significant advantage over urine tests which can only identify recent drug use.

Employers implementing drug-free policies benefit greatly from hair testing's reliability, ensuring workplace safety and compliance. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are nearly impossible to tamper with, providing a trustworthy solution for detecting substance use. This method gives peace of mind to both employers and legal authorities.

Extended Detection Window

In Wilton, AL, hair follicle drug testing offers a substantial detection window, revealing drug use patterns over a span of up to 90 days. This method provides employers with a thorough view of an individual's drug usage, beyond what shorter-term tests like urine can offer.

This extended detection capability is crucial for repeated evaluations or in settings with strict drug-free mandates. Through hair testing, employers gain invaluable insights into applicants' or employees' past behaviors, facilitating better-informed hiring and managerial decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the most robust facets of hair follicle drug testing in Wilton, AL is its tamper-resistant nature. This testing method is designed to resist adulteration, significantly reducing the potential for manipulated samples. As a result, it provides genuinely credible results that withstand scrutiny.

Sample integrity is crucial, particularly where zero-tolerance policies are in effect. Hair tests ensure that attempts to skew results are effectively mitigated, supporting employer and legal requirements for authenticity and reliability in drug testing protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
