Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services throughout Anthem, Arizona. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair analysis, we have centers across all major cities nationwide ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Our hair tests can evaluate substances, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent times as more courts, businesses, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer it over typical urine testing. Employers with strict no-drug-use rules, judicial bodies, and parolees regularly select hair tests. The outstanding advantage is the extensive detection time, typically up to 90 days, with secure and unalterable sampling. Nevertheless, urine testing remains superior for detecting recent 5-day usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a crucial mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows, it provides an extended history of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal sample for screening and verification requires a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands close to the scalp, yielding around 100mg of hair. For EtG assessments, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is favored. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a similar volume of body hair is an alternative. By 'head hair', we specifically mean scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core components in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the introductory handling of a sample within a laboratory framework. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. This cost-effective approach can largely exclude drug use across samples, though a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent verification.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair from the original specimen is prepared for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at comparably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS serves as the confirmation method for any positive screening results. All samples identified as presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Expanded detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a significantly shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: The integrity of hair drug testing is high due to the difficulty involved in tampering with it, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Timeline data: Offers a drug use pattern over an extended timeframe, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is typically more expensive than other testing methodologies.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the methodology examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
