At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Chloride, Arizona. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide with centers in every city capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair may suffice. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

Recently, utilizing hair follicle drug tests for drug screening has become more prevalent. A hair drug test is increasingly being mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists, replacing the conventional urine test. These tests are preferred by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The major advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, and their administration under observation which greatly minimizes the risk of tampering. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures long-term evidence of substance intake by embedding biomarkers in the strands during growth. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period extending up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of about 200 hair strands (roughly matching the size of a #2 pencil) measuring 1.5 inches from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and confirmatory purposes. For EtG, additional screens, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' pertains to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial processing into the lab’s system. This entails checking the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Although screening is a cost-effective method for dismissing drug use from most samples, any positive screen must be verified to be court-legitimate. Samples giving a presumptive positive result in Screening need a confirmatory test.

For samples with a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is drawn from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the more complex technique.

Positive screening results undergo confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in evasion: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby improving result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It supplies a record of drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair strands.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
