Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Eagar, Arizona. Facilities for conducting such tests extend nationwide. For a hair drug or alcohol test, including ETG or other custom testing needs, ensure at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is available on your head or body.

Drug testing increasingly incorporates hair follicle testing, gaining preference over standard urine tests among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Hair tests offer a prolonged 90-day detection window, effectively minimizing the likelihood of tampering during the collection process. However, urine tests remain accurate for recent consumption within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding markers in the fibers of the hair shaft, hair can reveal prolonged usage of alcohol and other substances. When cut close to the scalp, it can offer up to a three-month detection period for these substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair segment of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp typically yields 100mg, making it the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results is divided into four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data recording absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a screen showing a positive result needs to be verified for court admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a presumptive positive arises during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over a time frame, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
