In Pima, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair sampling, we excel in this form of testing and have centers in all Nationwide cities equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for most tests, which can analyze substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other hair-specific testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in the realm of substance screenings. This method is often preferred by employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. This preference arises from hair follicle tests being a better choice for those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies. They offer the advantage of a prolonged detection window, usually up to 90 days, while being collected under observation, thus minimizing the ability to manipulate the results. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair stores a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to nearly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, equates to 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We advise measuring the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in a lab's processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Verification.

Accessioning covers the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample comes back presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Verification, is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days compared to urine tests, which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very tough, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a drug use pattern over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot recognize recent usage: It takes nearly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: The test frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests" actually inspects the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing significantly outpaces urine tests in terms of detection capabilities in Pima, AZ. The extended window allows for identifying drug use over a more prolonged period, offering a detailed understanding of an individual's drug history. When compared to urine tests, hair tests ensure superior accuracy and are less prone to alteration, greatly benefiting employers and institutions that need foolproof results.

The reliability of hair testing prevails due to its resistance to tampering and its capacity to showcase a broader drug use timeline. The advanced detection mechanism ensures a comprehensive overview, making it a trusted option against urine tests which offer shorter detection periods, showcasing the strength of hair testing in maintaining rigorous drug use policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Pima, AZ, offers up to 90 days of insight into drug use, as opposed to the brief window allowed by urine tests. This extended timeline provides employers with a significant view into an individual's substance habits, greatly assisting in making informed decisions about potential hires or evaluating current employees' adherence to company policies.

Employers benefit extensively from understanding an individual's prolonged substance use history through hair follicle testing. This method equips them with the data required to accurately assess the suitability of a candidate for employment, thus enhancing reliability in maintaining a drug-free workplace and ensuring ongoing policy compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly reduces tampering risks in Pima, AZ, offering a robust method against adulteration attempts. Unlike urine samples, hair tests are less susceptible to external influences, reducing the possibility of manipulation and ensuring that results remain trustworthy and reflective of an individual's true substance use habits.

With hair tests, the integrity of the sample is preserved from collection to analysis. This reliability helps substantiate claims of substance abuse, making it a preferred choice in legal and employment scenarios. This method stands as a solid deterrent against those who might attempt to deceive traditional testing methods, providing peace of mind to employers and policy enforcers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
