Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Roosevelt, Arizona. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with testing centers available nationwide in every city to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method for drug screening. Many organizations, courts, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as legal and probationary bodies, widely use these tests. Hair follicle tests offer a significant advantage with their longer detection period, which can reach up to 90 days. They are collected under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant resource for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers capture biomarkers that offer an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake along the growth of the strand. When collected near the scalp, hair delivers nearly a three-month detection scope for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) situated closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the specimen applies. It is prudent to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. In discussing head hair, this pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other varieties (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse, serving as an economical method to eliminate drug consumption in the majority of samples. However, a preliminary positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that register as presumptive positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is selected from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase focuses on extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug assays can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • High difficulty to manipulate results: The nature of hair drug tests makes it extremely challenging to adulterate results, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offer historical insight: They reveal a pattern of substance use over a timeframe, not just information on recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Limited in detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Attributes like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter the level of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis in fact examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
