Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Somerton, Arizona. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair analyses and operate testing centers across all major cities in the United States. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for substance detection. Employers, judiciaries, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine analyses. This method serves those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, including employers and courts. Its key advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, collected through an observed protocol, making it hard to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use over the past five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substances by trapping biomarkers within the growing strands. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can deliver an alcohol and drugs detection timeframe of up to about 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing roughly 200 strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. “Head hair” pertains solely to scalp hair, while “Body hair” covers all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Four principal stages are involved in the lab processing for a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample enters a lab's system. This step involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective solution for ruling out drug use in the vast majority of samples, a positive screening outcome must be confirmed to be usable in court. Samples that test positive during Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation following ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more short-lived detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Passing a hair drug test is very challenging, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Historical usage insight: It offers a portrayal of drug use over an extended duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often referenced as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
