Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Williamson, Arizona. Specializing in hair substance testing, we offer our services nationwide with convenient centers across various cities. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance screening. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine samples. Hair testing is favored for its extended detection window of up to 90 days, meticulous collection, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by holding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for testing and validation purposes. For EtG, additional markers, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent portion of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The overarching process for lab handling of a drug test outcome includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into the lab's framework. This phase entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry that wasn't covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

The Screening phase involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. While screening is economical for eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any specimens that show a preliminary positive result during Screening need a secondary validation.

When a sample displays a presumptively positive result during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration in contrast to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methods to execute.

Validation of any positive results from screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive outcome are cleansed before validation as required. The entirety of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, as opposed to urinary tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair drug test is challenging to deceive, rendering the findings more precise.
  • Historical use patterns: It can demonstrate a timeline of drug usage over durations, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth differences can alter metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite the common reference to "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Williamson, AZ, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Its superior detection accuracy captures drug use history more reliably. Compared to urine tests, which have a limited detection window, hair testing can retrospectively show substance use patterns, assisting in making informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Williamson, AZ, benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing, spanning up to 90 days. This comprehensive insight allows for a thorough examination of an individual's substance usage history, aiding employers in making well-rounded assessments of their applicants or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
