Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Youngtown, Arizona. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is supported by facilities in every major city across the U.S. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or another body area is needed. We offer drug, alcohol/ETG, and tailor-made hair testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Where employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for these over typical urine tests. Hair tests, ideal for zero-tolerance policies and probation monitoring, offer a 90-day detection window, are done under supervision, and are difficult to tamper with. Urine tests remain precise within a five-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of such substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand. When cut near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use within about a 3-month timeframe. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the hair sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entrance of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive result must undergo Confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples testing presumptive positive during Screening are required to have a secondary confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), presenting a challenge unique to hair drug screening.

The confirmation step for any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire procedure is subjected to assessment under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use history spanning up to 90 days, unlike shorter-span urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The reliability of hair drug tests is heightened by being hard to manipulate.
  • Provides historical data: It reflects drug consumption patterns across time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests carry a higher price than other testing options.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
