Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Bigelow, Arkansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing with access to nationwide testing centers. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body is needed. Tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific evaluations.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of routine drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for workplaces with strict drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. A key advantage is the extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, using an observed collection method, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests are more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reflect a drug and alcohol usage timeframe of up to about 3 months. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send off.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimum sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional services, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a proportionate amount of body hair is a suitable alternative. The term “head hair” strictly applies to scalp hair. Conversely, "body hair" encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This phase entails ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry the electronic chain of custody system didn't provide.

Screening entails an initial brisk evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drugs in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Samples presumed positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If presumed positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a noticeably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleaned before confirmation, as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test renders the outcomes more dependable.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage, not merely depicting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Outcome disparities: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Despite being called “hair follicle tests”, the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bigelow, AR, hair follicle testing surpasses conventional urine tests in several key areas. This method detects drug use with greater accuracy, providing a more reliable assessment of an individual’s substance intake history. The prolonged detection period associated with hair testing uncovers patterns of drug use over an extended timeframe compared to urine tests.

For employers, the hair follicle approach means fewer false negatives and eliminating the risks associated with sample manipulation common in urine tests. The superior reliability and the advantages of the longer detection window make hair test results more trustworthy, supporting robust drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Bigelow, AR stands out due to its extensive detection window, which reaches up to 90 days. This comprehensive window empowers employers to gain a substantial understanding of an individual’s substance usage history, assisting in informed decision-making.

For organizations prioritizing stringent drug-free policies, the extended detection timeframe of hair tests enables a broader examination of drug activity, presenting a long-term view rather than a snapshot, thus fostering a drug-free workplace with greater confidence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in Bigelow, AR, significantly minimizes the chances of tampering. Unlike other tests, the inherent nature of hair sampling reduces the potential for adulteration, ensuring authentic and verifiable outcomes every time.

This tamper-resistant trait of hair follicle testing challenges attempts to manipulate results, cementing its reputation as a reliable option for employers keen on maintaining integrity in drug testing protocols, thereby solidifying trust in the results acquired.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
