Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mountain Valley, Arkansas. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in hair testing and have centers across the nation for convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Over the past few years, using hair follicle drug tests for substance detection has gained popularity. A growing number of employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies in workplaces, legal compliance, and monitoring individuals on probation. The key advantage is the prolonged detection time, up to 90 days, making it hard to falsify results. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for evaluation and verification. For EtG assessments, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We recommend measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug testing result involves four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s procedure. This step entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening consists of a preliminary evaluation for drug residues. While Screening efficiently excludes drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive result demands further validation to be legally accepted. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional portions of hair are extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations when compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most complex techniques.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is undertaken through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before final confirmation if necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to evade: The challenge in deceiving a hair test enhances the credibility of its results.
  • Shows usage trends: Provides a pattern of substance use over time rather than isolated recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs require 5-7 days to manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair testing incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair shaft, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Mountain Valley, AR, surpasses traditional urine tests by revealing a superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests that only detect recent drug use, hair tests can identify substance use over a far extended period. This makes them invaluable for employers and other entities needing a thorough examination of an individual’s drug use history.

The reliability of hair testing is due to the fixed nature of drug molecules within hair strands, making it extremely difficult to falsify results. While urine tests are subject to tampering or adulteration, hair tests offer a more foolproof solution. As a result, organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies prefer hair follicle testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Mountain Valley, AR, hair follicle tests provide an extended detection window that can trace drug use up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive view allows employers to assess long-term patterns of substance abuse that urine tests might miss, giving them a clearer picture of an applicant's or employee's history.

This expansive timeline is crucial for employers aiming to maintain strict drug-free environments. By evaluating drug use over several months, hair tests provide insights into behavioral patterns and long-term compliance. Such detailed information helps employers make informed decisions, safeguarding health, safety, and workplace integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Mountain Valley, AR, employers can rely on hair follicle tests for a tamper-resistant testing method. Hair tests are known for their resilience against sample adulteration, making them ideal for maintaining accuracy and integrity. Unlike urine samples, which can be easily contaminated or substituted, hair samples provide undeniable results.

The built-in safeguards of hair follicle testing reduce the chance of manipulations and false negatives. This reinforces the test’s credibility, offering peace of mind to employers and agencies requiring accurate drug use data. Ultimately, hair testing stands as a robust measure to prevent fraudulent practices in detection processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
