In Palestine, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have a vast network of testing centers across every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for analysis. Our tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized needs.

The trend towards hair follicle drug tests as a preferred method has grown in recent years, with employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly opting for it over urine tests. Hair tests serve organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary monitoring. Favorably, they offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and are highly resistant to tampering. For recent drug use, up to 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they develop. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can present a detection frame of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively tamper-proof, and is easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests extending beyond 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of hair. It's suggested to measure the weight of the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a specimen into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data input not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening offers an expeditious preliminary inspection for drugs of concern. While Screening is a cost-saving measure to eliminate drug use in many samples, a favorable screen result must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that yield a potential positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Upon a sample receiving a presumed positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), underpinning the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any favorable screen result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use extending to 90 days, while urine tests possess a shorter detection timeline.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating results from a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can showcase a drug use pattern over time, rather than isolating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Detectability of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier in comparison to other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the focus is on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine tests in Palestine, AR? The answer lies in enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing offers prolonged substance use traceability, unlike traditional urine tests, making it an exceptional choice for thorough substance analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
