Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rockwell, Arkansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers across the nation ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances as required.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has gained traction for screening purposes. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analysis. This method is favored by those enforcing strict drug policies due to its extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, and near impossibility to falsify. For screening within the immediate 5-day period, however, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The growing strands of hair capture biomarkers, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal a detection period of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) near the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first processed into the laboratory's system. This step consists of confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any outstanding data entry tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid analysis to detect drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive results must undergo confirmation to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening results suggest a positive outcome, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed by using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation, if needed. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The resistance to tampering makes hair drug testing results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: The test can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically have a higher price point compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the scalp's underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
