In Alto, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests, ideal for assessing both drug and alcohol use. We operate numerous testing centers across the nation, each skilled in conducting hair analysis efficiently. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for most tests, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances based on specific needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a reliable method, often chosen over traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor this approach due to its prolonged detection window of up to 90 days and its resistance to tampering, enhancing its effectiveness for workplaces with zero-tolerance drug policies. Despite its advantages, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. It offers an extended history of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to nearly 3 months for alcohol and substances. Hair is uncomplicated to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate for measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifies scalp hair only. "Body hair" denotes all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab system. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to negate substance use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally admissible. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows tentative positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are taken from the hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the more challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use as far back as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's notably challenging to compromise a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It gives a pattern of substance use over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other substance testing techniques.
  • Result variance: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
