Accredited Drug Testing provides all-encompassing hair follicle drug analysis services in Brooktrails, California. Those requiring a hair or alcohol screening can rely on us, as we excel in this domain with facilities spread across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of cranial or body hair is sufficient for such tests. This method can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored tests.

Recently, using a hair follicle drug test has notably increased in popularity. This method is becoming preferred by various employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists over typical urine analysis. It's favored by zero-tolerance employers and those on probation due to its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, secure observation during collection, and its resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for substance detection within a brief five-day window, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal drug and alcohol use within a roughly 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equal body hair volume may be used. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory employs four fundamental steps in processing drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step, where a sample gets processed into a lab's system. It entails confirming the proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing any missing data entry outside of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial drug abuse check. While economical for negating drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal proceedings. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (like urine or saliva), highlighting the challenges of conducting hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It offers usage patterns over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though referred to commonly as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
