Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Carmel, California. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing. With testing centers nationwide, including all cities, we conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffices. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method to detect drugs. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and probation officers favor hair follicle drug tests due to their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, observed in a supervised collection, and they are nearly impossible to falsify. Yet, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in the hair strands trap biomarkers, offering an extensive record of drug use. When cut near the skull, hair can deliver up to a three-month span of drug and alcohol detection. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp translates to 100mg—the optimal sample for initial and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If head hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be retrieved. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair exclusively. "Body hair" refers to other varieties of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure where a sample is incorporated into the lab’s framework. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry missing from the digital chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is budget-friendly and rules out drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for court acceptability. Samples flagged as positive in Screening need secondary verification.

For presumptive positives during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the specimen for the Extraction process. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than methods like urine or saliva tests, making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of any screening-positive result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair screenings can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, outperforming urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • High resistance to manipulation: The difficulty in manipulating hair drug tests enhances result precision.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can trace drug consumption trends over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are often pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
