Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Citrus, California. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, offering locations in every city Nationwide equipped to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for most tests. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, the practice of drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers adhering to zero-tolerance drug policies, the courts, and those on probation. The chief advantage lies in its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days. The sample collection is observed, making cheating virtually impossible. Conversely, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests persist as the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances, trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. By collecting hair close to the scalp, it offers a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending up to about three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is difficult, and shipping is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is short, an equivalent amount from body hair can be used. Referring to head hair means scalp hair alone, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test result processing in the lab consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into a lab’s database, ensuring it is properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entries absent in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial drug presence check. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive results need confirmation for court acceptance. Samples with positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening phase finds a sample positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the toughest methods to execute.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Reduced cheating: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Records historical usage: It tracks the pattern of drug consumption over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent consumption: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Citrus, CA is evident from several angles. Hair tests offer unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability, often surpassing urine tests. While urine tests might detect recent drug use, hair tests present a comprehensive detection overview, making them more reliable for extended periods, hence preferred by many institutions and employers.

Hair testing methods in Citrus, CA emphasize superiority over traditional urine testing. While both tests have their merits, hair testing's ability to detect substances over a longer period provides a more accurate and complete account of an individual's drug use history, serving as a critical tool for decision-makers.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
