Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Columbia, California. If you're looking for a reliable hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing. Our testing centers, available across all U.S. cities, can accommodate your needs with tests that require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body. Our hair assessments can evaluate for substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can also be tailored for specific tests.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for substance testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts have opted for these over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, as well as courts and individuals on probation, frequently use hair follicle tests. Their main advantage is the extended detection period of drug use, usually up to 90 days, combined with the tamper-resistant observed collection method. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, the urine test remains the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or above 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When we refer to head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within the laboratory's setup. This step consists of verifying the sample's seal and proper shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, rapid evaluation for the presence of drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a screen result must be confirmed for it to be legally admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a second confirmation test.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing a complex procedure.

Any positive Screening result is validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Columbia, CA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in effectiveness. Unlike standard urine screening, hair testing offers extended detection duration and robust accuracy, identifying substance use over a greater period. Hair tests detect drug use up to 90 days, reflecting consistent use patterns and minimizing the potential for false negatives.

Comparative Benefits: Hair tests excel in accuracy and reliability, offering undeniable evidence of substance use. Comparatively, urine tests often face challenges in detecting long-term use, reducing their efficacy for employers seeking comprehensive assessments.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle tests in Columbia, CA, is a significant advantage. Unlike other methods, hair testing identifies drug use over three months, providing a comprehensive history of substance consumption. Employers gain a clearer picture of applicants' or employees' drug habits, enhancing decision-making and workplace integrity.

Benefits: An extensive detection period ensures that occasional users don't bypass screening, thus maintaining a drug-free work environment. This approach supports employers in achieving long-term safety and compliance goals.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Columbia, CA, is renowned for its tamper-resistant design. Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to adulteration, hair testing significantly reduces manipulation risks.

  • Unquestionable Results: Ensure integrity with secure testing procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
