Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Cudahy, California. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities across nationwide cities ready to conduct these tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for custom testing options.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly been used for drug screenings in recent years. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists often prefer this method over traditional urine tests. It's ideal for organizations with stringent drug policies, legal proceedings, or probation scenarios. Key advantages include detection over a longer span, up to 90 days, with secure collection processes minimizing cheating. Yet, urine tests remain supreme for recent substance usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has become recognized as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures an extended timeline of drug and alcohol interactions by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken directly from the scalp, hair can span up to around a three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both examination and validation. For EtG, additions, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample's weight. If scalp hair isn’t present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean only the hair on the scalp. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result entails four primary procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary stages of entering a sample into a lab's workflow. This process verifies correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that is not supplied by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening involves an initial swift analysis for potential drug abuse. While Screening provides an economical measure to rule out drug usage in the majority of situations, positive screens must be verified to be legally valid. Every sample that comes back as presumptive positive in Screening calls for a subsequent verification.

Should a sample show presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower density compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug detection is one of the most challenging techniques to conduct.

Any positive screen result goes through Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can discern drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which monitor for a shorter period.
  • Hard to rig: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more precise findings.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally cost more than other drug screening methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth variations can sway the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the hair follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
