Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Del Dios, California. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this area, boasting numerous testing centers across the nation that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as offer customizable testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. These tests are preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals instead of the usual urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are essential for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, and individuals on probation. A primary advantage is a longer drug detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, making it hard to falsify. However, for recent drug use detection, within 5 days, urine tests are still considered most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they develop. When taken near the scalp, hair can present around a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional elements, or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. Referencing head hair implies scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to any other type (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for obtaining a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen within a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands verification for legal acceptance. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly lesser concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is amongst the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug evaluations can detect substance consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timespan.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, therefore results tend to be more dependable.
  • Offers historical insights: It delivers a pattern of drug use over time, rather than a snapshot of recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically cost more compared to other testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
