Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fairfax, CA. For those who require hair or alcohol testing, we provide expert hair analysis through our nationwide network of centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or additional tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a predominant method for drug screening. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse advisors are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers prefer this method due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and observed collection process, which minimizes chances of tampering. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When the sample is taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering with it is somewhat challenging, and it is uncomplicated to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample has been appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Despite being an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that exhibit a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a further validation process.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is remarkably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to choosing between hair follicle and traditional urine testing in Fairfax, CA, hair tests offer a compelling advantage. Enhanced Detection capabilities and longer timelines make them more reliable. While urine tests only detect recent usage, hair tests unveil an ingester's history over many weeks, giving more precise home substance consumption insights.
This superior accuracy proves vital for zero-tolerance settings.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Fairfax, CA offers a significant window of detection, capturing drug usage up to 90 days prior.Employers gain a comprehensive understanding of an employee's substance history, beyond the immediate past. This extended analysis allows more informed decisions when evaluating potential hires or monitoring current staff, ensuring a substance-free workplace.
This broader timeline surpasses traditional methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Reducing the risk of sample tampering is crucial, and hair follicle testing in Fairfax, CA, stands prominent in achieving this.Reliability is paramount, and hair tests are notably resistant to manipulation. Unlike alternate testing methods, hair samples are impermeable to external manipulation, thus maintaining trustworthy results. This integrity is essential for entities relying on accurate substance use documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
