Located in Gerber, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, specialized hair testing services are available nationwide. Testing centers in every city are equipped to perform hair tests, which typically require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair. Hair samples can be analyzed to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more common in recent years, with employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favoring them over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation departments rely on them for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions and difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent substance use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the head, hair can provide roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a proportional quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair alone, and body hair refers to any other hair types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result includes four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introduction of a sample into a lab’s system. This comprises verifying sample seal and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary fast assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, positive screenings need confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging approach.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical data: It can demonstrate drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
