Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Glen Ellen, California. For those needing hair-based drug or alcohol tests, our specialty is hair testing with facilities available nationwide for this purpose. Typically, we require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other bespoke testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. It is often preferred by employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are selected by employers with strict zero-tolerance policies, the legal system, and those on probation. The major advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, a process that's closely monitored, making it nearly impossible to deceive. However, for identifying drug use in the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now widely recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands can offer an extended history pertaining to these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair’s growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair has the potential to reveal a detection window of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to deceive, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which represents the optimal quantity for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to collect 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample within a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug presence in majorities of samples, a confirmatory test is necessary for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumed positive results in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

When a sample exhibits presumptive positivity during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis among the most challenging procedures.

Confirmation for any positive outcome in Screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests identify drug use over up to 90 days, compared to the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Resistance to compromise: Cheating a hair test poses significant difficulty, enhancing result credibility.
  • Gives historical insight: It can chart drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Individual variations in hair color and growth can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Though colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp, that is analyzed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
