Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Good Hope, California. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing and has centers nationwide capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing choices.

Recently the trend in drug testing has increasingly favored the use of hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers. The significant advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process, making it nearly cheat-proof. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Analyzing hair has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of its strands as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, this method can reveal a usage history of up to three months. Hair is simple to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for assessment and verification. For extensive tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. Here, “head hair” specifically means scalp hair, while “body hair” includes all other types (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in labs consists of four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is introduced into the lab’s system. The process confirms the sample’s sealing and shipment integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data input not captured by digital chain of custody systems.

The Screening phase initiates with a swift examination for illegal drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that yield a presumptive positive must undergo additional confirmation.

For any presumptive positive samples, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, substances are separated from the hair at a substantially lower concentration than other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing remains the most challenging method.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS are used for confirming positive Screening results. Presumptive positive samples are thoroughly cleaned before Confirmation if necessary. Throughout the lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation, compliance is ensured with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation guidelines, and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Upsides of hair drug screening:

  • A wide detection scope: Hair drug testing can capture drug use history for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which provide a shorter window.
  • Harder to falsify: Hair drug examinations are difficult to manipulate, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It showcases a timeline of drug consumption over a period, not just recent uses.

Challenging aspects:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair samples.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
