Accredited Drug Testing provides hair follicle drug testing services throughout Highland, California. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we specialize in such tests with facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts favor them over urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation, offering a detection window up to 90 days, using observed collection, making it hard to manipulate results. For drug use within 5 days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeframe of drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to an approximate three-month window for drug and alcohol detection. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches containing around 200 hairs (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmatory tests. For specific tests like EtG enhancements or panels higher than 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and filling in any missing information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial swift assessment for drug substances. It serves as a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples. However, a positive screen must be further confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use back to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to alter: The accuracy of hair drug tests is high due to the difficulty in tampering with them.
  • Provides usage pattern: It delivers a drug use timeline over a duration, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot find recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistency: Factors such as hair color and growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
