Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hilmar, California. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in offering reliable hair testing, available in testing centers across all U.S. cities, including Hilmar. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffice for various analyses like drug, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become the preferred method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests due to their superior ability to identify drug use, as opposed to traditional urine tests. The key advantage lies in detecting traces for up to 90 days, with collections observed to prevent tampering, providing a virtually cheat-proof solution. Yet, urine tests remain optimal for detecting use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is viewed as an effective mechanism for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of about 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than found in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a more constrained detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can reveal a trajectory of drug use over an extended duration, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Potential outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
