At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Igo, California. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair, we specialize in this method and have testing centers across the country to facilitate hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available for testing, though body hair can also be used. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other specialized options.

The hair follicle drug test has become a more common method for drug testing in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly mandating hair drug tests as an alternative to the traditional urine test. This is particularly favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and probation officers. One of the key advantages of hair follicle tests is their longer detection window of up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and minimal potential for manipulation. However, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests still hold higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly perceived as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fiber structure of a growing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch fragment containing around 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp achieves 100mg, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond 10, it's advisable to collect 150mg. We suggest measuring the sample with a precision jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a matching quantity of body hair may be used instead. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result encompass four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input beyond what is covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Samples that hint at positivity through Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If Screening returns a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the unique challenge of conducting hair drug screenings.

Confirmation of positive Screening results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples suspected positive are carefully washed before undergoing confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory process, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It can outline a drug usage pattern over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair within 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
