Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ingot, California. If you require a drug or alcohol test conducted on hair samples, you can rely on Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair testing. We provide services through testing centers located in cities across the country, capable of performing hair tests. Typically, you'll need between 1.5 and 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head, though body hair may also be used. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made hair testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common as part of drug testing protocols. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A key advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected through an observation-based process, rendering it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now considered a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled nearest to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period for alcohol and drugs of up to about three months. It's straightforward to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (about the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides approximately 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When scalp hair is mentioned, it pertains exclusively to hair from the scalp. Body hair includes all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases of laboratory drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial inducting of a sample into a laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any other necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody is recorded.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening helps economically rule out drug use for many samples, a court-admissible positive result must be confirmed. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If during the Screening phase a sample is identified as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a much diminished concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to carry out.

For each positive screening result, Confirmation is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples thought to be positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can recognize drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: The test provides a usage pattern over time rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: There is a lag of about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is more costly than other methods.
  • Result variability: Concentration of drug substances in hair can be affected by factors like hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Although labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
