In Jamestown, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides holistic solutions for hair follicle drug assessments. Our expertise in hair screening covers both drug and alcohol analysis, and our centers are available nationwide for convenience. Typically, hair lengths between 1.5 to 2 inches are required, either from the scalp or body, for conducting drug or customized hair analysis.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has grown, often replacing the traditional urine test among employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts. Companies with strict no-drug policies favor hair tests for their extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, and ensuring a tamper-proof procedure. Nonetheless, urine tests remain superior for identifying very recent drug use, typically within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as a significant method for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Through embedding biomarkers in the fibers of a hair strand as it grows, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs. If gathered near the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or when testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair is suitable. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all hair types elsewhere (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a sample into a laboratory system. This involves checking the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening will need further confirmation.

If a sample is considered presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are obtained from hair in notably lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), presenting a challenge in hair drug screening execution.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when needed. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: It is notably hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect prompt use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
