Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in La Crescenta, California. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol through hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is equipped for such testing, with centers across the nation. For accurate results, approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The trend towards utilizing hair follicle tests for drug detection has grown, replacing traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance professionals now favor hair drug tests. These tests are invaluable for zero-tolerance environments, legal scenarios, and probation settings, offering up to 90 days detection. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for recent use detection, up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to approximately a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch piece of about 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for checking and verifying. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are talking about scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples; however, a confirmed screen is essential for court admissibility. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample suggests a positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Harder to manipulate: It is notably difficult to fool a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical tracking: It can reflect a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There is roughly a 5-7 day period before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
