Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ladera Ranch, California. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and maintains testing facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly request hair tests instead of urine tests. They are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies and used by courts and those on probation. The primary advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window—up to 90 days. They also require observed collection and are difficult to tamper with, although urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use, offering a prolonged history of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as hair expands. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and other drugs for around a 3-month span. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG screenings, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is preferred. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable mass of body hair can be used. Note that "head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory drug test assessment encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase involving sample integration into a lab's system, which includes confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid check for abusive drugs. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples presumed positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests positivity, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at considerably lower levels than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, if needed. This entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol and ISO / IEC 17025 standard certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can discover drug use for up to 90 days, versus the shorter window for urine tests.
  • Difficulty with test evasion: Hair tests are notably challenging to tamper with, increasing accuracy.
  • Historical use data: They offer a drug use pattern over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ladera Ranch, CA, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are apparent. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, revealing substance use up to 90 days prior. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle analysis minimizes errors and false negatives, providing a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug history, which is crucial for enforcing zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Ladera Ranch, CA, provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This longevity gives employers a broader view of an individual's drug history compared to other testing methods. By capturing a more extended timeframe, hair tests enable a detailed assessment of an employee's or applicant's substance use patterns, supporting informed decision-making processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
