Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lemon Hill, CA. We specialize in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, with testing centers across the nation, including every city. Typically, individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available for the test, and body hair can be used if needed. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over standard urine tests by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, such as employers and courts, prefer hair tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, along with the difficulty in tampering. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber. When collected near the scalp, hair may offer roughly a 3-month detection range for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch cut consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement of the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. In this context, head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair includes all other kinds such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The procedure of laboratory analysis for drug testing is comprised of four significant phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary assimilation of a sample within a lab’s procedures. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry lacking in the electronic chain of custody documentation.

Screening acts as an initial brief assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly method for ruling out drug presence in most samples, any positive Screen must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase necessitate a validation through another step.

If a Screening phase sample shows presumptive positivity, extra hair is retrieved from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. Here, drug residues are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those in alternate practices (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies available.

Verification of any positive screen occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are also cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for a period up to 90 days, contrasting with urine evaluations that possess a limit.
  • Difficult to dupe: It is highly challenging to circumvent a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It can chart a timeline of substance usage over time, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite amounts in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually performed on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
