Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for drug use detection in Live Oak, California. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. Generally, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body may be collected. These tests can screen for a variety of substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Primarily used by zero-tolerance workplaces and probationary programs, these tests offer a detection window of up to 90 days, making them exceptionally reliable and challenging to manipulate. However, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers within the follicle's fibers. When procured close to the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will amount to 100mg, a prime sample for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other categories (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of vital steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This encircles confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not afforded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary brisk inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical manner to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be admissible in a legal setting. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

In instances where a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at a considerably lower concentration than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening poses the highest level of difficulty.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the endorsement to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations which have a briefer detection period.
  • Heightened accuracy: It is considerably challenging to deceive a hair drug exam, thus ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological data provision: It can reveal a trend of drug usage over a specified timeframe, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements such as hair color and personal growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis processes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
