Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Ojai, California. For those in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities available Nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other specific testing needs.

Over recent years, drug screenings more frequently incorporate hair follicle evaluations. Many businesses, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair drug assessments over traditional urine examinations. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those under probation. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, gathered through an observed procedure, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, to identify recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe spanning up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types (such as facial, axiliary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive result necessitates verification to be admissible in judicial proceedings. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening demand a further confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples receive washing before confirmation, if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, which increases accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, instead of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
