Located in Otterbein, CA, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair follicle drug tests nationwide. With centers in various cities, our experts ensure thorough drug or alcohol screenings. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this method over urine tests. It is favored by those enforcing drug-free policies, the judicial system, and probation officials. A key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, its observed collection, and difficulty in tampering. However, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 strands of hair (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) at the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent volume of body hair can be sourced. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug analysis result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. Tasks include ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any auxiliary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-beneficial for dismissing drug use in most specimens, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court acceptability. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary affirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair substance testing represents one of the most intricate methodologies.

Verification of any positive screen is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to verification if required. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests for drugs can identify usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in higher accuracy.
  • Supplies historical patterns: It provides information on drug use patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It typically takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair shade and individual growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair to urine testing in Otterbein, CA highlights distinct advantages. Hair testing boasts a lengthier detection span and superior accuracy, given its ability to identify substances used months prior. Urine tests, though common, fall short in this regard, making hair testing the go-to solution for comprehensive drug use detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
