Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Parkway, California. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair evaluations and offer testing facilities across all cities in the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair analysis can be conducted for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug evaluations have become more prevalent in drug testing procedures. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug evaluations over standard urine analyses. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. The major advantage of hair assessments is their extended detection span of up to 90 days, collected through a monitored process, and almost impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within a five-day period, urine analysis remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged historical record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, this hair can present a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 hairs (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and validation. For EtG, supplementary items, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, a proportional amount of other body hair can be collected. When using the term head hair, we specifically mean hair on the scalp. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps integral to processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes checking the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial basic assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptability. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper: It's extremely challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insights: It offers a timeline of drug usage across an extended period, not confined to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to assess recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Fluctuations in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Even though they're often called "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
