Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Parlier, California. Specialists in hair and alcohol analyses, we boast testing sites in every city across the country to carry out your hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary for analysis. Hair samples can test for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing needs.

The use of a hair follicle test has increasingly become the standard for drug testing in recent years. Many businesses, legal systems, and addiction counselors are opting for it over the conventional urine exams. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation. Their main advantage lies in a longer detection span of drug use, extending up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process nearly impervious to manipulation. Nevertheless, urine tests still offer the most accurate results for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands as it grows, offering a comprehensive timeline of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for a detection period of up to roughly three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sampling size of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximating the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair may be substituted. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves sample intake processing into a lab’s system, which ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any extra data input not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a brief initial evaluation for substance misuse. Though Screening is economically favorable for eliminating drug use from many samples, court acceptability requires confirmation of any positive screen. Samples that test initially positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

Should the Screening stage indicate a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), hence why hair drug analysis remains one of the more complex methodologies.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, outperforming urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to falsify: The hair drug test's complexity curtails cheating, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Provides a timeline of drug use, extending beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth variations may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, but it pertains to analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
