For hair follicle drug testing in Phoenix Lake, California, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair tests, our centers are available nationwide, including all cities, to cater to your hair drug or alcohol test needs. Typically, hair from the head's crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to specific needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent, replacing traditional urine tests in various contexts. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation offices prefer hair drug tests because of their extended detection span of up to 90 days, observed collections, and difficulty to manipulate. However, urine tests hold superiority for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It retains a historical record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within hair strands as they grow. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection period of 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Providing a 1.5-inch sample, roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG tests, additional panels, or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair indicate scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary handling of a sample in a lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid check for drug presence. Though Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage across most samples, a positive screening requires verification for legal admissibility. Any Screening results that are tentatively positive necessitate further confirmation.

When Screening results are tentatively positive, additional hair is gathered from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair screening one of the complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of positive screen results employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples are pre-washed when needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection limits.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides temporal data: It reveals a timeline of substance use over an extended duration, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair tests typically incur greater costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth can influence metabolite levels.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is somewhat misleading, as the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
