In Rice, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, they boast a nationwide network of centers ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. This method screens for various substances, from drugs and alcohol to specific testing options.

Hair follicle testing has become a common tool for drug screening due to its advantages over traditional methods. Many organizations including employers with no-drug policies, courts, and probation officials are choosing hair tests. These tests are difficult to cheat, provide up to 90-day usage detection, and are conducted under strict observation, although for drug detection within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is considered a potent means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers into the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can deliver up to an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four critical steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening cost-effectively excludes drug usage in most cases, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any sample that shows a presumptive positive during Screening needs further confirmation.

When a sample appears presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methods to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with a presumptive positive result are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very difficult to cheat a hair drug test, making the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can provide a pattern of drug use over a period of time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
