Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Rouse, California. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing and presence in numerous cities across the country ensures that we can conduct a hair test at a location near you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair testing can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle exams. More employers, legal systems, and addiction professionals now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Businesses with no-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers rely on hair follicle tests. Notably, this method has a detection window of up to 90 days, involves a closely monitored collection process, and is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the preferred method for detecting use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair tests has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by trapping specific markers in the growing hair's structure. When extracted close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hairs (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it's recommended to have 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for accurately measuring the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, the equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By 'head hair', we exclusively mean scalp hair, while 'body hair' pertains to other hair types such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into a lab's system. This stage involves ensuring that the sample is securely sealed and properly delivered, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and performing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic custody transfer system.

Screening entails a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive results from Screening must be verified to be legally binding. Presumpively positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other procedures (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome occurs through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is observed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days post-consumption, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is nearly impossible to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over a timeline, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become identifiable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
