Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Salida, California. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analysis, with testing facilities across all cities in the Nation ready to conduct a hair screening. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be evaluated. Such tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor to other specific hair analysis needs.

Recently, the approach to executing drug tests has increasingly embraced hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are leaning towards hair tests over standard urine analyses. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and parolees often rely on hair follicle screenings. The primary advantage of hair follicle evaluations includes a greater detection window for drug consumption, usually up to 90 days, collected through an observed method and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal information for about a 3-month period regarding alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential steps involved in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of inputting a sample into a lab's system. It involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that give a positive result in Screening require a further confirmatory step.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening finding is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection time frame.
  • Challenges in falsification: It is notably challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: There is a 5-7 day period before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Salida, CA, hair follicle testing excels over urine testing by offering a more reliable detection method. The all-encompassing nature of hair analysis effectively identifies drug presence with precision and accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle evaluations provide an expansive detection window of up to 90 days, making them superior in preventing overlooked drug use.

The benefits of hair testing are notable compared to traditional urine approaches. With its increased sensitivity and resilience against tampering, hair follicle assessments present a more robust solution. They minimize the limitations faced by urine tests while ensuring reliable results, thus offering greater accuracy and peace of mind for employers and individuals alike.

Extended Detection Window

In Salida, CA, hair follicle testing offers an extensive detection window that captures up to 90 days of drug use history. This capability gives employers valuable insights into a candidate or employee's substance use. By utilizing hair analysis, companies can have a comprehensive view of an individual's behaviors, ensuring informed decisions regarding employment.

Hair follicle evaluation's prolonged detection period gives an edge over traditional testing methods. This approach is uniquely fitted for identifying long-term patterns of drug use, thereby benefiting employers seeking thorough background checks. Employers can gain a broader understanding of applicants’ substance history, paving the way for better decision-making in the hiring process.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Salida, CA, hair follicle testing stands as a tamper-resistant solution that significantly reduces the chances of sample manipulation. By collecting hair samples in a meticulously observed process, the possibilities for adulteration are virtually eliminated, yielding dependable and irrefutable results in drug testing scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
