In Summerland, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis. With facilities across the nation, we offer hair tests, requiring at least 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair in most cases, to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screenings. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. They support zero-tolerance policies, aiding courts and probation cases. Hair tests excel with a 90-day detection window, collected under supervision, making them difficult to tamper with. Despite this, urine tests remain unmatched within a 5-day usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a potent solution for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands, roughly the size of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. It's best to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an identical quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court admission. Any samples that are suggestively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests suggestively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High difficulty to falsify: It is exceedingly tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can trace a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Summerland, CA, hair follicle tests outshine traditional urine tests thanks to their heightened detection accuracy. Hair tests are less prone to manipulation, offering more reliable results than urine tests, which can be easier to tamper with.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
