Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle testing services in Trabuco, California. Need a hair-based drug or alcohol test? Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide where such tests can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for analysis. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Over the years, drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests suit employers with zero-tolerance policies, court cases, and probation requirements. A key advantage is the extended detection range, up to 90 days, conducted via an observed process, making cheating almost impossible. Yet, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair analysis has emerged as a powerful method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair fibers capture markers of these substances over time, allowing for a long-term record of usage. Samples taken near the scalp can reflect up to a three-month period of drug and alcohol use. This sample type is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch hair segment closest to the scalp, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness), yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For specific tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the hair using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, equivalent body hair may be used, with "head hair" specifically indicating scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where the sample is entered into the laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not cover.

Screening refers to the initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive screen must be validated to be acceptable in court. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing proves to be the most complex technique.

All positive results identified in Screening are corroborated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire testing sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing identifies drug use up to 90 days in the past, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • High integrity: The process offers extreme difficulty in test manipulation, yielding highly accurate results.
  • Trends in use: Hair testing reveals drug usage patterns over time, beyond merely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Hair needs approximately 5-7 days before drugs become traceable within it.
  • Higher cost: Typically, hair tests are more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle test" is commonly used, yet the test actually analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
