Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lakeside, Colorado. Whether you require a hair or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and offer facilities nationwide for such analyses. It is essential to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown, or body hair may be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing approaches have increasingly embraced hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor these over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as judicial systems, prefer hair tests due to their prolonged detection window of 90 days. These tests are conducted under observation, making them difficult to manipulate, but urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a compelling method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a repository for long-term histories of substance use by locking biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can provide an approximate detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, though it proves somewhat challenging to tamper with, and it is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample size for initial testing and further analysis. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. Employing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. In the event scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional necessary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective solution to ruling out drug use for most samples, confirmation is required for any screen deemed positive to be considered admissible in legal proceedings. All samples with presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and then readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to perform.

The confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are thoroughly washed before undergoing confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Hurdle to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological insight: A hair test can uncover a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: The detectability of drugs in hair requires about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variabilities: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle itself beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
